Fishing Regulations in the Oslofjord

The Oslofjord is subject to special fishing regulations designed to protect fish stocks and improve the marine ecosystem. These rules apply throughout the Oslofjord, including the waters around Fredrikstad and Hvaler.

Visitors and residents should be aware that one of the Oslofjord’s three no-fishing zones is located off the coast of Hvaler.

Cod Fishing is Prohibited

Fishing for cod is prohibited throughout the entire Oslofjord all year round. The ban also applies to fishing while diving.

No-Fishing Zone near Hvaler

One of the Oslofjord’s three no-fishing zones is located in the Hvaler archipelago. In these areas, all fishing and the harvesting of shellfish and crustaceans are prohibited.

The restrictions apply to both recreational and commercial fishing.

Only Hand-Held Fishing Gear is Allowed

Recreational fishing for fish is only permitted using hand-held gear, such as:

• Fishing rods
• Hand lines
• Other hand-held fishing equipment

Pot Fishing Regulations

The following restrictions apply to recreational fishers:

• Up to ten pots per person and vessel for shellfish harvesting
• Up to five lobster pots per person and vessel during the lobster season
• Shrimp fishing with pots is prohibited
