It is easy to get around Hvaler by bus, ferry and taxi boat. Here you will find an overview of the transport options.

Hvaler is an island municipality outside Fredrikstad, consisting of 833 islets and skerries. Skjærhalden is Hvaler’s largest settlement and is located on Kirkøy. Here there is a guest harbor, shops and restaurants. Ytre Hvaler National Park has an exhibition in Kornmagasinet.

At Hvaler you can fish, swim, eat well, sail, lie on smooth-cut rocks, paddle or explore Ytre Hvaler National Park. You can visit Hvaler by bike, by boat, by car or by public transport.

How to get to Hvaler

By car you can get all the way to Skjærhalden on Kirkøy, which is Hvaler’s largest settlement. From Skjærhalden you can take a boat to Hvaler’s outer islands and to Strømstad. At Skjærhalden there is a guest harbour, shops and restaurants. Access to Hvaler is by pleasure boat, car or bus. There is a boat and ferry from Skjærhalden to Nordre and Søndre Sandøy, Herføl and Lauer, as well as a regular ferry to/from Strømstad. There is a bus from Oslo to Fredrikstad and Hvaler approx. once an hour. See timetables here.

The Hvaler ferry departs from Skjærhalden and takes you to the eastern islands of Hvaler.

During the summer (from June until September), this boat operates between Skjærhalden (Hvaler) and Strømstad (Sweden) every day, except Sundays.
