The Monument Munch's Mothers
The monument Munch’s Mothers is atributed to two central women in Edvard Munch’s life, his mother Laura Cathrine Munch and his aunt, Karen Bjølstad.
Munch’s Mothers is a monument in bronze and granite by the artist Birthe Marie Løveid depicting Edvard Munch as a small boy with his mother and Aunt Karen.
The monument is also intended as a celebration of all the women who "stand behind" and "point the way forward". A symbol of all the women who selflessly and invisibly devote themselves to supporting those around them. We all know a few of them.
The Bjølstad sisters grew up in on the outskirts of Fredrikstad, where Edvard and his siblings often paid visits, especially to see their dear maternal grandfather.
Munch’s Mothers has been made possible through fundraising by the ad hoc organisation Munchs Mødre 2013.
