Gamlebyen, the old fortress town

Gamlebyen is one of Northern Europe’s treasures with its well kept buildings, cobbled streets and a wonderful mixture of every day life, art, history, boutiques, museums, exhibitions and dining places. All in all this creates a unique atmosphere for everyone to enjoy. The star shaped moat surrounding the city is perfect for a picnic, a stroll and to lower one’s shoulders. It´s so pleasant that we even have a name for it. To "jangle" on the moat.

Also the children find their calm in Gamlebyen. Especially with Benny and Bella and all the other goats you find next to the large play ground, accompanied by a group of happy chickens. How about a train ride at Gamlebyen Modelljernbanesenter, the miniature train museum and a visit to Fredrikstad museum with special events for children.

The fortress town offers great shopping in small unique boutiques, exhibitions and markets, with possibilities for many stops along the way in the town’s many dining places.

Gamlebyen often arranges concerts in all genres, jazz nights and a vast number of festivals, like Litteraturfestivalen, Månefestivalen, Strikkefestivalen, Jazzfestivalen and Mozartfestivalen. And, of course - history. Just a stroll along the streets take you hundreds of years back in time. A perfect blend of times gone by and modern days.

And remember, in Gamlebyen there is something happening all year round with exiting festivals and events both during spring, fall and winter. Not to mention the very special "Jul i Gamlebyen" where you are brought back in time to the Christmas you remember from your childhood, lots of atmosphere, family time and no stress. We also have shops that are open on Sundays, all year round.
